Spring Flowering Bulbs
Spring Flowering Bulbs must be planted in the FALL. Linder’s will carry a fabulous selection of Tulips, Daffodils and other spring blooming bulbs during the fall.
Planting
- Sunny to partial shade
- Well drained organic soil, if possible
- Multiply the diameter of the bulb x 2.5 or 3 = Planting depth in inches
- Plant with pointed tip facing up
- Recommend planting in groups or clusters (Large bulbs in 3 or more; small bulbs 10 or more)
- Use Bulb Booster or Bone Meal at the time of planting
Spacing
- Small Bulbs 3-4 inch apart
- Tulips & Daffodils 5-6 inch apart
Location
- In Perennial beds (bulbs will be through blooming by the time perennials come up), and Annual beds
- Among trees and shrubs
- Along pathways
Winterizing
- After planting, water thoroughly. After ground is frozen, place 3 to 6 inches of hay over the bulbs to keep the ground frozen and to keep the bulbs from coming up too soon.
In the Spring
- Don’t cut leaves off until they’re brown!
- Remove dead flowers and allow the foliage to die back naturally. Fertilize again in fall with bulb booster.
Trouble Shooting
- If foliage fails to come up:
- Maybe the soil stayed too wet and bulbs rotted
- May have been eaten by rodents
- May have been planted too deep
- If foliage grows but does not bloom:
- May have been planted too deep
- Not enough sun light
- May be overcrowded, needs to be divided
- Foliage may have been removed too early previous year
- Bulbs were too small when planted
- Offsets are using the nutrients
Suggestions for Success
- Kneepads (Many Uses!! On benches at ball games, at picnics, in the garden)
- Bulb diggers (short or long handled)
- Garden gloves, Spades, forks
- Bulb Booster, Bone Meal
