Norfolk Island Pine Care
Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla)
This particular Norfolk (heterophylla) is the only one treated as a houseplant. The Norfolk is a slow-growing tree having stiff branches with bristly needles. It is considered easy to grow and with the right conditions will grow to about 5 feet.
Temperature:
Average warmth of 65-70 degrees during the day to 60-65 degrees at night. It will tolerate cooler locations as well, down to 50 degrees.
Light:
Bright or semi-shade - near a sunny window but no direct sun.
Water:
Water thoroughly when the soil surface is dry, draining any excess water from the saucer. Water less frequently during the winter months.
Fertilizing:
Follow manufacturers directions.
Other Care:
Mist occasionally, especially if the room is very dry and hot.
Repot in spring every 3-4 years.
Problems:
May have leaf drop and loss of the lower branches which is caused from hot, dry air or soil drying out. May also be caused from low light, improper watering or spider mites.
