Hummingbird & Oriole Cocktail
NORTHERN ORIOLE COCKTAIL
- Heat inexpensive grape jelly in a large microwave bowl.
- Microwave two minutes and 30 seconds on high. Stir.
- Microwave two minutes and 30 seconds on high again. Stir.
- Add an equal amount of warm water.
- Microwave three minutes on high.
- Cool before putting in feeder and refrigerate remaining juice for later use. Discard after 4 days or if cloudiness develops.
- Clean the feeder thoroughly every 2 or 3 days and refill. In hot weather, do this daily.
HUMMINGBIRD COCKTAIL
- Mix one part sugar to four parts water.
- Heat in microwave (helps dissolve sugar and kills organisms that might grow in mixture). Spoiled solution may be toxic to the birds.
- Food coloring is not needed. Solution should be placed in a colorful feeder.
- Refrigerate any extra mixture you have for future use. Discard after 4 days or if cloudiness develops.
- After a 2 or 3 days, clean the feeder thoroughly and replace with fresh solution after cleaning. In hot weather, replace daily.
- Do Not use honey water or sugar substitute.
Note: Place oriole and hummingbird feeders out in late April or early May. Brightly colored feeders will help birds locate the feeders. Use a cut half orange to initially attract orioles.
