Congratulations to Britta Wilson, floral designer at Linder's Flower Shop!
On Saturday, March 2nd, Britta took 4th place and the People's Choice Award for her floral arrangement submitted during the Minnesota Design Challenge at the Minneapolis Home and Garden Show.
Here's what Britta had to say about the competition:
The theme was "Inside and Outside the Box". We were required to use 50% of the cardboard box they provided us with.
At one point in the competition I set my knife down on the table and then set my clippers down next to it. The clippers locking mechanism does not always latch. So when I set them down they sprung open and shot my open knife into the first row of the audience. The clippers then shot backwards and hit my competitor, Diane Enge of Bachman's in the foot.
I've participated in three finals and this was the fewest amount of flowers I've even been given to work with in a final. So that made it extra challenging. 10 Anemones, 5 Tulips, 1 Decorative Pineapple, 1 antherium, steel grass, bear grass, salal and 3 stem of croton leaves.
Other contestants who have been in many more finals over the years concurred that this was the least amount of product they had ever been given as well.
I cut my box in half set it on its side and then peeled open the top to make it look like the flowers were bursting out the top. Other contestants cut up pieces and rolled them to look like bamboo, or suspended smaller box shapes above their arrangements.
